Hello! I’m Maurice Auberry. I was born in Joplin, Missouri, and moved to Columbia at the start of my undergraduate schooling. I currently attend Mizzou, where I am a senior. I anticipate graduating with a BS in Psychology, with minors in Black Studies and Criminology.  My goal after my time at Mizzou is then law school, where I plan to study criminal law.

Ever since I was young, I have known that I wanted to help people. This dream has led me to many places, and I am so happy that Empower is allowing me to continue that dream. I am very excited to work under our Criminal Justice Policy Manager, Gwen Smith. She, along with the rest of the staff at Empower Missouri, are advocating for those who have been impacted by the many inequalities that plague the various institutions in the state that we love so much. I am grateful for the opportunity, and plan to use the skills I gain working with Empower in my future career in the field of law.

I am specifically working on our Clean Slate campaign and am very excited at the progress we have made. House Bill 352 and Senate Bill 347 have been pre-filed for the 2023 legislative session, and we look forward to working with bill sponsors Senator-Elect Curtis Trent and Representative Phil Christofanelli through the process. You can go to https://www.mocleanslate.org/ to learn more about how Clean Slate legislation will help more Missourians with a criminal record access the expungement process they are entitled to and deserve.
