PURPOSE
Empower Missouri is seeking a Food Security Intern or Practicum Student to support our
advocacy work aimed at increasing food security for Missourians. Interns and practicum students
will contribute to policy research, testimony development, coalition-building, data analysis, and
public education efforts. This is a valuable opportunity for individuals interested in public policy,
community engagement, and food justice.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
● Engage with community members and advocates around food security issues and recruit
them into the Food Security Coalition.
● Write policy briefs on food security issues as assigned.
● Assist with policy research on other anti-poverty priority issues as needed.
● Submit testimony in the Missouri State Capitol as needed.
● Monitor legislation and track movement of food-related bills.
● Track and share the hearing schedule of the Missouri House and Senate with partner
organizations.
● Take notes and prepare reports on Capitol activities as assigned.
● Create fact sheets and informational handouts on key food security issues.
● Take notes and assist with follow-up tasks for Food Security Coalition meetings.
● Attend meetings and events related to food security advocacy.
● Offer suggestions for improving the internship/practicum experience for future
participants.

REQUIREMENTS
● Basic understanding of food security.
● A commitment to food security + Empower Missouri’s mission and values.

● Effective written and oral communication skills.

Time Commitment
● 15 hours per week (flexible schedule).
● Availability for some meetings between 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
● This is a remote position open to candidates located in Missouri, with occasional travel to
support in-person events or advocacy efforts in Mid-Missouri and the state capitol.
● We are happy to work with students to ensure this role fulfills practicum or field
education requirements for academic credit.

Compensation
● $13.50/hour
