Happy New Year from everyone at Empower Missouri! As we enter the new calendar year, it’s a perfect time to set intentions or resolutions for the next twelve months. This is especially true for those of us who work in the government and advocacy space in Missouri – Legislative Session starts in just five days and will continue  through the middle of May. Looking toward the new session and year, here are a few things that Empower Missouri wants to do better, and how we plan to do them.

Stay true to our mission.
Empower Missouri exists to advocate for justice and empower change. As we learned from Dr. King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We work to focus our state’s lawmakers on ways to eliminate injustice for our neighbors who experience it the most. By keeping our focus on and consulting with individuals with low incomes, Empower Missouri can be as effective as possible in the capitol, helping to pass legislation that lifts individuals, families, and communities out of poverty, and preventing the passage of legislation that keeps them there.

Build our coalitions.
Empower Missouri is only as effective and influential as the people we work with. To make sure we foster a collaborative environment for the organizations and individuals who work on the same issue areas as us – hunger, housing, criminal justice reform, and HIV modernization – we staff coalitions that convene and advocate together on those topic areas. If you’re interested in becoming a member of one of these coalitions, visit our coalitions page and sign up. If you know a friend who also may be interested, send them this link!

Reach further.
Missouri is a large state, with millions of individuals and millions of individual stories and circumstances. By connecting with more people, Empower Missouri can strengthen our coalitions, increase our activism power, and encourage civic engagement across the state. If you want to help and are able, there are a number of ways that you can support Empower Missouri’s efforts to connect with more Missourians:

  1. Forward this email to a friend.
  2. Tweet about our mailing list.
  3. Follow us on Facebook.
  4. Follow us on Twitter.
  5. Share posts that you like from our blog.

All of this is only achievable with your help. We rely on supporters like you to fuel the advocacy that we do to move Missouri into a more equitable future. If you haven’t yet, consider a one time or monthly recurring donation in support of our efforts.

…and most importantly, have a Happy New Year!
