Empower Missouri is hiring three interns for the Fall of 2024! These positions are open to students or early career professionals interested in furthering their education in the areas of housing policy and tenant organizing, communications, or fundraising. All positions are remote, open to anyone living within the state of Missouri, with the opportunity for some in-person activities or travel to the state capitol as needed. Communications Intern

PURPOSE

The Communications Intern will assist the Communications Manager with the development of marketing and communications campaigns for Empower Missouri, to include design and/or writing of marketing collateral, website maintenance, social media management, and other duties as assigned. The Communications Intern will work independently and with a team to help grow Empower Missouri’s reach throughout the state. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest and experience in writing, social media management, and/or graphic design.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the development of content for and management of social media, including the launch of groups to increase engagement with our coalition members
  • Assist with the development of content for and management of Empower Missouri’s website and campaign microsites
  • Assist with the creation of emails including e-newsletters, event promotions, and fundraising appeals
  • Help track and report key metrics, including media tracking, social media, email, and website analytics
  • Assist with additional communications research, planning, and development as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  • A strong interest and/or experience in strategic communications work. Students in their 3rd or 4th year of a program in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related major will be a good fit.
  • A commitment to social justice + Empower Missouri’s mission and values
  • Excellent computer skills, experience with social media management, Canva, and/or Wordpress is a plus
  • Superior written and oral communication skills

TIME COMMITMENT

  • 15 hours per week, flexible schedule
  • Availability for some meetings between the hours of 9AM-5PM, Monday through Friday
  • Ability to work remotely with the opportunity for some travel as necessary to support events or actions at the state capitol

$12.30/Hour

Communications Manager

PURPOSE

The Fundraising Intern will assist the Development Manager with the organization’s efforts to secure funding, cultivate relationships with donors, and enhance our overall development processes. The Fundraising Intern will work independently and with a team to support Empower Missouri’s fundraising efforts through research, data management, communications, and logistical assistance. This role provides a solid foundation for a career in nonprofit development.

POTENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Communications: Draft correspondence, newsletters, and other fundraising materials.  Track donor milestones; support acknowledgement processes.
  • Data & Reporting: Compile data and generate reports.
  • Event Support: Provide support for fundraising events through research and prospecting of venues and in kind donations
  • Research: Investigate new fundraising initiatives, corporate giving trends, and potential corporate sponsorships. Research potential grant opportunities as assigned by the Development Manager.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A strong interest and/or experience in development/fundraising work. Students in their 3rd or 4th year of a program in communications, marketing, nonprofit management, or a related major will be a good fit.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong research, analytical, and organizational abilities
  • Experience with donor database software a plus

Development Manager

PURPOSE

The Affordable Housing Intern will support Empower Missouri’s leadership role in the advancement of Affordable Housing policies, which includes supporting the development of tenant unions in Mid-Missouri, supporting legislation and policies that increase access to housing, and providing education on affordable housing issues to the community. The Affordable Housing Intern will assist with policy research, organizing campaign events, and other activities as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with planning, promoting, and hosting town hall events to educate the community on relevant housing policies and issues.
  • Research event opportunities for Affordable Housing outreach and tenant meetings.
  • Take part in tabling events or outreach events to educate the community about our affordable housing work and Empower Missouri
  • Connect campaign volunteers with volunteer opportunities and assist with volunteer management
  • Assist with Tenant Union and Affordable Housing Coalition working group meetings as needed
  • Write policy briefs on affordable housing policies or other affordable housing issues as assigned
  • Submit testimony in the capitol for housing bills and attend city council meetings in Mid-Missouri as needed 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Basic understanding of the housing system in Missouri.
  • Candidates who are currently tenants are strongly encouraged to apply

  • Effective written and oral communication skills

TIME COMMITMENT

  • 15-20 hours per week, flexible schedule
  • Position has a rolling start date, but must end by May 2025
  • Availability for some meetings between the hours of 9AM-5PM, Monday through Friday
  • Ability to work remotely with the opportunity for some travel as necessary to support events or actions at the state capitol or Mid-Missouri
