At 6:23pm on October 1st, 2019, the state of Missouri carried out the cruel and unusual execution of Russell Bucklew. This will serve as a stain on our state for the rest of its existence. Jeanette Mott Oxford, Executive Director of Empower Missouri, issues the following statement in response.

“The execution of Russell Bucklew is an act of complicity and defeat on the part of the Missouri state government. As heinous as Mr. Bucklew’s crime was, judicial homicide does nothing to make our state safer or more humane. Through this deeply egregious act, our state has embodied a belief that violence is a policy option and that murder is acceptable when performed with taxpayer dollars.

“We are deeply disappointed that the execution was not stayed by Gov. Parson nor the Supreme Court. We will continue working toward the day when public policy models that non-violence is our societal norm and priority.”
