Tony Baker

Board Member

Hailing from Southeast Missouri, Tony has had a life-long focus on social justice, poverty, and inequality, particularly on campaigns and initiatives for free, quality basic education and helping governments, donors, and partners come together to support the right to education.

Following undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Tony volunteered with Peace Corps in Tanzania, returning there after further graduate studies to work with HakiElimu, an education and democracy rights civil society organization. There he developed and coordinated research-to-advocacy campaigns around such issues as in-service teacher training, corporal punishment, and government budget and expenditure tracking. He then went on to serve as the Associate Director for Global Education at RESULTS, a citizen advocacy organization based in Washington DC, where he led international advocacy in support of education, including developing the Right to Education Index, a global accountability initiative across 21 countries. Tony currently works with World Vision International, a Christian relief and development organization operating in nearly 100 countries, supporting their advocacy and engagement with partners such as the Global Partnership for Education, Education Cannot Wait, the World Bank, and UNICEF.

Tony holds bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy and Religious Studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a master’s degree in Sustainable Development with a concentration in Policy Analysis and Advocacy from the School for International Training in Vermont. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Global Partnership for Education, the world’s largest global fund solely dedicated to education in lower-income countries, as well as the Board of Directors of the Global Campaign for Education, the world’s largest civil society movement working to ensure the right to education with coalitions in nearly 100 countries.

Tony resides in Jackson, MO and enjoys paddleboarding, kayaking, and community volunteer activities.
