Empowering You Webinar – Clean Slate Expungement – March 19th, 2020

Ellen Yankiver Suni is Dean and Professor Emerita of Law at UMKC School of Law, where she served as dean from 2004-2017. She officially retired from the faculty effective September 2019 but continues to teach on an as-needed basis. Her “retirement project” is the CMR Expungement Project, which blends her long-term interests in criminal law, law and technology, and access to justice. She is working to help develop technology to make it easier for people of low and modest means to obtain expungement and to create an Expungement Clinic at the law school that will serve those needing expungement of their criminal records but who are unable to afford representation.

In her nearly 40 years at UMKC, Dean Suni has been actively committed to access to justice. She has been a project developer and builder of programs to assist those traditionally underrepresented in law to succeed in the profession as well as those impacted by the legal system, but who cannot afford adequate representation, to get the services they need.

Div. at Eden Theological Seminary in 1989 and an honorary doctorate in human letters from the same institution in 2010. In addition to the Clean Slate Expungement presentation, Jeanette Mott Oxford will provide a “First Half of Legislative Session Overview” and Coronavirus Advocacy Response Update.

My name is Samantha Capkovic, and I am a senior pre-law undergraduate student. I am double majoring in Political Science and Communications with an emphasis in Journalism and Mass Communications. This is my second semester being a member of the Clear My Record team, and I plan on attending law school in the Fall 2020 semester. I hope to continue doing advocacy work and helping members of the community gain access to justice.

My name is Iris Siadatifard and I am a current 2L at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. I also completed my undergraduate degree at UMKC where I majored in Political Science and Geography. Last semester, I became involved in my school’s expungement project as a volunteer. This semester I decided to enroll in the course and take a more hands-on approach in the work.

My name is Savina Balano. I am a second year law student at UMKC. The unique opportunity to help people have their criminal convictions expunged from their record has been the most impactful part of my journey in law school thus far.
