Check out our Q&A with Missourians to Abolish the Death Penalty (MADP) Executive Director Heidi Moore below. Thank you for your partnership and incredible advocacy work, MADP!
What does “People-Powered Policy Change” mean to you?
To me, People-Powered Policy Change means that regular people have the ability to create real change by getting involved in the political process. Even though it can be challenging, there are accessible ways for individuals to speak up, organize, and push for policies that matter to them and their communities.
If you could pick one policy change that we could make next, what would it be and why?
Well, it makes sense for me to choose abolition of the death penalty, as that is the singular issue of our non-profit. I am happy to be out of a job if we abolish capital punishment in Missouri. This would allow money to be diverted to schools, public safety and prevention, and victim issues.
What advice would you give to an organization considering partnering with Empower?
To build effective, long-term partnerships with Empower focused on shared goals and community impact, maintain an open, sustained collaboration. Deepen the partnership by attending Empower’s trainings and events and supporting those hosted by other partners.
What famous duo from a movie/show/book reminds you of the partnership between your organization and Empower Missouri?
Michael Rezendes and Walter “Robby” Robinson from Spotlight are an ideal example because their partnership demonstrates how persistence and experience, when combined, are essential for pursuing truth and accountability in the public interest.
What theme song would you pick for your organization’s partnership with Empower Missouri?
“Rise Up” by Andra Day
