Former Missouri state senator Jeff Smith, Executive Director of the Missouri Workforce Housing Association (MOWHA). MOWHA fights to preserve and strengthen Missouri affordable housing programs, and Smith will share some of the successful strategies being used by this 175-organization coalition.
In addition to his work at MOWHA, Smith is Professor of Politics and Advocacy The New School’s Urban Policy graduate program. He has also taught at Washington University (where he received the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence) and Dartmouth College.
Jeff represented St. Louis City in the Missouri Senate from 2006-2009. He has written three books: Trading Places, his Ph.D. thesis on modern U.S. partisan realignment, Mr. Smith Goes to Prison (St. Martin’s, 2015), a call for prison reform based on his incarceration, and Ferguson in Black and White, an historical analysis of the roots of Ferguson, Missouri’s unrest. His writing has been published in various political science journals, including Political Research Quarterly, Political Science Quarterly, y The Forum, as well as in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Politico Magazine, The Atlantic, The New Republic, CNN.com, Inc., National Journal, Salon, y el Chicago Tribune. He lives outside New York City with his wife & two toddlers.
