PURPOSE
Are you passionate about housing justice and want to make a real impact in Missouri? Empower Missouri is looking for an Affordable Housing Intern or Practicum Student to support advocacy, education, and organizing efforts to expand access to safe, affordable housing. Interns and practicum students will gain valuable experience in community outreach, public policy, and coalition-building.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with planning, promoting, and hosting town halls, community forums, and educational events related to housing issues and tenant rights.
  • Support outreach activities with tenants, grassroots organizations, and housing advocates.
  • Participate in tabling or outreach events to educate the community about Empower Missouri’s housing work and services. 
  • Research and identify opportunities for additional outreach and engagement with impacted communities. 
  • Conduct research on affordable housing policies at the state and local level, including current housing-related bills, municipal ordinances, and federal initiatives.
  • Draft policy briefs, fact sheets, and educational materials on key housing issues.
  • Submit testimony on relevant housing legislation and attend hearings or city council meetings in Mid-Missouri as needed.
  • Assist with coordination and logistics for the Affordable Housing Coalition.
  • Support communications and relationship-building with coalition members and partner organizations.
  • Help track and engage volunteers in housing-related advocacy opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate records of contacts, events, and campaign progress.
  • Other duties assigned to support the housing policy team’s goals.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Basic understanding of housing issues and systems in Missouri.
  • Candidates who are currently tenants, or who have lived experience with unstable or unaffordable housing, are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Commitment to housing justice + Empower Missouri’s mission and values.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.

TIME COMMITMENT

  • 15 hours per week (flexible schedule).
  • Availability for some meetings between 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Ability to work remotely, with occasional travel to support in-person events or advocacy efforts in Mid-Missouri and the state capitol.
  • We are happy to work with students to ensure that this opportunity meets their practicum or field education requirements.

COMPENSATION

  • $13.50/hour
