Governor Kehoe and some Republican legislators are advancing a new tax plan for Missouri that boils down to swapping out Missouri’s income tax (currently capped at 4.7%) for a greatly expanded sales tax on the products and services Missourians purchase every day. Our partners at Missouri Budget Project estimate that over 80% of Missourians would pay more in taxes under the scheme, with a median four-person household earning $65,000 would pay over $500 more in taxes than they currently do. Unsurprisingly, only the wealthiest Missourians would actually get a tax cut, piling on to the tax cut that they just received when Missouri became the first state in the country to eliminate the tax on capital gains.
In addition, the scheme would blow a $5 billion hole in the state budget, resulting in cuts to local schools and other services our communities rely on. Eliminating the income tax rigs the system for the wealthy, while hurting working people, families, and communities. Please join us in telling our legislators to vote NO on Missouri’s proposed tax scam.
