Position Overview 

Empower Missouri seeks passionate and engaged community members to serve as Tenant Captains for the next six months.  This role offers a meaningful opportunity to advocate for improved access to housing and tenant protections in rural Missouri, share local perspectives, and help shape policies that protect tenants and improve access to affordable housing. 

Our goal is to create access to affordable housing for every community in Missouri. Tenant Captains are essential partners in achieving this mission. 

This is a 6-month position from December 2025-May 2026.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represent the needs and perspectives of your community related to tenant rights and access to housing. 
  • Attend and actively participate in Empower Missouri’s Day of Action (2/17/26) at the Capitol and monthly online meetings
  • Collaborate with local residents, organizations, and stakeholders to improve access to housing.
  • Assist with outreach and engagement efforts to ensure diverse community voices are heard. 
  • Identify individuals for a media story about housing in your community.
  • Participate in training and support activities to engage in local and state advocacy efforts to improve access to housing in Missouri.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Tenants who are passionate about ensuring all Missourians have access to housing.
  • Comfortable sharing stories and encouraging others to share theirs. 
  • Willing to collaborate with people from various backgrounds and experiences. 
  • No formal education or professional experience required—lived experience is highly valued

COMMITMENT & SUPPORT

  • Meetings: Empower Missouri’s 2026 Day of Action (2/17/26) and monthly online meetings. 
  • Time Commitment: 2-4 hours per month outside of meetings, as needed.
  • Compensation: $250 monthly stipend for active participation. 
  • Travel Support: A gas card will be provided to offset travel expenses for Day of Action. 
  • Advocacy Training: Empower Missouri will provide training and support to help Tenant Captains engage in effective local and state-level advocacy.
  • Term: December 2025 – May 2026
