One of the most impactful was a significant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dor.mo.gov\/taxation\/business\/tax-types\/sales-use\/reduction-on-food.html#:~:text=Section%20144.014%2C%20RSMo%20provides%20a,information%20on%20eligible%20food%20items).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decrease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the food sales tax led by our Hunger Task Force back in 1999. Our leaders identified that issue because our task force members were keenly aware of how sales tax is an extremely regressive form of taxes. Our neighbors with the lowest incomes feel the burden of those taxes more than folks with higher incomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is still true over 20 years later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic brought to light the struggles low wage workers face in ways that we had not seen for a long time. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/the-pandemic-hurt-low-wage-workers-the-most-and-so-far-the-recovery-has-helped-them-the-least\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workers with low incomes were less able to stay home, less likely to have sick leave to care for themselves and their families, and more likely to experience a job loss. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minimum wage is not enough to support a family. With skyrocketing housing and food prices families just can\u2019t make ends meet. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, food prices have gone up 8% over the past 5 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7935\" src=\"http:\/\/empowermissouri.org\/app\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Food-Sales-Tax-slides.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/empowermissouri.org\/app\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Food-Sales-Tax-slides.png 960w, https:\/\/empowermissouri.org\/app\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Food-Sales-Tax-slides-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/empowermissouri.org\/app\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Food-Sales-Tax-slides-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/empowermissouri.org\/app\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Food-Sales-Tax-slides-18x10.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the increase in food prices, so has the amount of taxes collected on the sale of food. Sales taxes increase income inequality because low-income individuals end up paying a higher share of their income on basic needs like food. Empower Missouri and many of our partners are working on them every day. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fightfor15.org\/showme15\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing the minimum wage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mffh.org\/our-focus\/medicaid-expansion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded healthcare access<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, y <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/moenvironment.org\/food-farm-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasing support for local farmers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just to highlight a few. As always, it is important to view food access as a system. There is no golden policy solution that would immediately address nutrition inequality across the state. In addition the bulk of food sales taxes that our neighbors pay is actually through local taxes, including extra taxes which are used to offset development costs in specific areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empower Missouri supports eliminating the sales tax on food as a step toward nutrition equity.
