We believe the key to attaining food security for all Missourians is through policy change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our work to ensure food security is accomplished in three ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Coalition building<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the foundation of our advocacy work. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/empowermissouri.org\/es\/policy-priorities\/food-security\/food-security-coalition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Coalici\u00f3n por la Seguridad Alimentaria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by our two<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/empowermissouri.org\/es\/about-us\/staff\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> food security policy managers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is comprised of individuals and organizations from all areas throughout the state who work together to create, promote, and protect<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedingamerica.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-12\/Food%20Security%20Evidence%20Review%20August%202020.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> evidence-based best practices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that increase food security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We leverage<\/span><b> Legislator Education <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a powerful advocacy tool. Our team ensures Missouri legislators have accurate and up-to-date information. This advocacy tool enables them to make informed decisions when drafting, filing, and passing legislation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empower Missouri offers <\/span><b>Advocacy Training <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to organizations and individuals. Our team provides opportunities such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/empowermissouri.org\/es\/week-of-action\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Week <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/empowermissouri.org\/es\/events\/2025-day-of-action\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day of Action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/empowermissouri.org\/es\/events\/2025-back-to-session-bootcamp\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back-to-Session Bootcamp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and our annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/empowermissouri.org\/es\/summit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anti-Poverty Advocates Summit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to individuals interested in enhancing their advocacy skills. Median household income, unemployment rate, and percent of single-parent households are also closely associated with food insecurity.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having sufficient, nutritious food, especially during childhood, is essential to living a healthy and successful life. Food security during childhood increases academic, cognitive, behavioral, and mental health outcomes as well as overall lifetime earnings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15.4% of Missouri households are food insecure. To help support their families and to make ends meet each month, many of these families supplement nutrition sources through private charities and government-funded nutrition programs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En Misuri:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poverty Indicators:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">756,528 Missourians live in poverty.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">219,414 Missouri children live in poverty<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% of Missourians over age 64 live in poverty.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Median household income is $68,920 (national is $80,610)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8.3% households are single-parent households<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3% unemployment rate<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seguridad alimentaria&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">951,330 Missourians are food insecure (1 in 7)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">248,620 Missouri children are food insecure (16%)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 428,000 children receive a free or reduced-price lunch during the school year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">636,724 individuals receive SNAP benefits.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">89,541 Missourians participate in the Women Infants and Children&#8217;s (WIC) Program.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, according to Feeding Missouri, the 6 major food banks in Missouri distribute over 130 million pounds of food every year through over 1,500 community feeding programs located all across the state.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Outcomes Related to Food Insecurity:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36.6% of the population is obese<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12.4% have diabetes<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">37.5 % have hypertension<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Insecurity costs Missouri $1 billion annually in <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/app\/profile\/feeding.america.research\/viz\/TheHealthcareCostsofFoodInsecurity\/HealthcareCosts\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoidable healthcare costs<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/app\/profile\/feeding.america.research\/viz\/TheHealthcareCostsofFoodInsecurity\/HealthcareCosts\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our neighbors living in poverty often face limitations that reduce their ability to access sufficient, nutritious food. Private charities can and do play a role in addressing hunger in our communities, but they cannot do it alone. Our government should ensure every person in our country has enough resources to be able to access enough healthy food to support an active and healthy lifestyle. There needs to be comprehensive policy and programmatic strategies at the governmental level to fully address the need.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.8599999999999999; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 15pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #606060; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Empower Missouri recommends these long-term proposals to address poverty and food insecurity in Missouri:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0; Advocating for protections and changes to these programs to enhance participation and their efficiency is vital to a food-secure Missouri. Our team not only shares program information and updates with the public and our coalition, but we also have work groups dedicated specifically to these programs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our policy work involves building relationships with legislators to help advocate for the creation of statutes that will increase food security throughout the state. This process includes ensuring legislators are equipped with the information necessary to promote policies that will create positive change and discourage policies that do not. Our teams also testify in support of policies that promote food security and testify in objection to policies that do not. Our advocacy training opportunities offer effective testimony training to multiply our impact by increasing and amplifying the voices of advocates during hearings.
